True Happiness through Purity in Heart (Matthew 5:8)

Image
Proverbs 4:23 says, “ Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”  Our heart is the centre of our emotion, desire and understanding. It affects every aspect of our life. Jesus cried out saying, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that outside also may be clean. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness ” (Matthew 23:25-28). In Jesus’ time, whole society was busy to perform different rituals in the temple thinking that it would purify them. But our Lord Jesus Christ didn’t emphasis on rituals to reform...

True Happiness Through Mercy (Matthew 5:7)

Christianity is neither religion nor philosophy, but it is a relationship and practice. Through Jesus Christ, we have intimate relationship with God which was broken because of the sin; and it is a reaching out to the world practicing love and mercy. When a body of water doesn’t flow out, it becomes a stagnant pond, likewise without practicing love and mercy in order to reach out others makes Christianity a boast of stagnant. The prophet Micah says, “ He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? ” (Micah 6:8). We all need to understand that without practicing justice and mercy, it is not possible to have deep relationship with God. Therefore our Lord Jesus Christ condemned the religious leaders during his time saying, “ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters o...

True Happiness through Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness (Matthew 5:6)

Image
Biologically every living thing needs food and water to grow and to survive. It is said that an average person can survive 21 days without food and 3 days without water. Hunger and thirst is a sign of life . No one has to teach someone to be hunger and thirst. It is natural for even a baby longing for mother’s milk. Peter writes in the epistle, “ Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation ” (1 Peter 2:2). A dead never have to hunger and thirst. It is also a sign of good health . One of the most important questions a doctor can ask a patient in the course of an examination is ‘how is your appetites’. Because lack of appetites is always a cause of concern and may be a symptom of serious disease.   This same principle can be applied for our spiritual life. When being a believer we have little or no appetites for spiritual things, something is seriously wrong, although outwardly everything seems perfectly in order. Scott...

True happiness through Meekness (Matthew 5:5)

Jews had been waiting for Messiah for centuries. They expected that he would come with some kind of military power and would throw off the dominion of Rome. Messiah would establish a Jewish state and rule the world. Jesus Christ was born in the house of a poor carpenter and brought up in Nazareth village. He picked up humbles fishermen to be his disciples. He had neither kingdom nor military power. He preached of non-violence and forgiveness. Therefore the Jews could not believe Jesus Christ as their long-awaited Messiah. They could not recognize Jesus as the Messiah, because they had failed to understand the description of the Messiah as Isaiah predicted. Isaiah had prophesied of Messiah as the suffering servant of Lord (Isaiah 53). Apostle Paul writes, “… we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews …” (1 Cor. 1:23). To the Jews it was unthinkable that the Messiah would die on the cross as a transgressor.   Therefore the word of the cross was folly for them (...

True Happiness through Mourning (Matthew 5:4)

(The Exposition on Matthew 5:4 is delivered on 4th March 2018 at Phulbari Sewa Mandali.)  In 6 th Century BC around 500 years before Lord Jesus Christ incarnated in Bethlehem, Gautam Siddhartha was born in Lumbini at Nepal to the royal family. It is said that his father King Suddhodana wished for his son to be a great king. Therefore he was brought up in all kinds of comfort and pleasures of life. According to tradition, when he was 29 years old, he went out to meet his subjects. On the way, he saw an old man who was walking slowing with a stick. He asked his charioteer of this old man, he explained that all men grow old and become physical week. As they went further, Gautam Siddhartha saw sick man and a corpse taking for funeral.
