We only think of great criminals and big scandals but why do we spit or smoke in public places or buses? Why do we tear page from library book? Why our public toilet, bus stand or railway station or government hospitals stinking? Why do we cross red light traffic signal, and bypass the speed breaker? What do you think? Is it not a sick society that we live in? We condemned great criminals but we forget the universal truth that “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23) Around 2000 years ago, our Lord Jesus Christ began HIS earthly ministry in such sick society, where religion had become a business, and a means of oppression of weak and poor. “… Crowds were astonished at his teaching” (Matt. 7:28) and HIS teaching and performing miracles became difficult to digest for some especially religious groups of Jewish society because HE pointed out their hypocrisy. Although Jesus had received the news regarding the sickness of Lazarus, he didn’t run immediately. After two days, Jesus took the way to Bethany where Lazarus was living with her two sisters. But Jesus knew that Lazarus has died and HE has also told to disciples about it (vs. 6-15). After reaching in the Bethany, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. It is the last sign of seven signs which John narrated in the Gospel.   There are two specific objectives which Jesus had told the disciples: “… the Son of God may glorified through it” (vs.11:4) and “… you may believe” (vs. 11:15). In this narration, Jesus put the death in deathbed; and finally on the cross HE compelled death to commit suicide; and in HIS resurrection, HE put the last nail on its coffin. John narrates an incident in his Gospel which is found in Chapter 3. It is familiar for us because John 3:16 is found in this chapter. A Jewish religious teacher named Nicodemus went to Jesus in night and had a conversation. Jesus didn’t care about his theology, his work-based religion, his position in Sanhedrin and his knowledge of Scripture. Nicodemus begins the conversation saying, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (Jn. 3:2). When he saw miracles of Jesus, he believed in HIM, but his belief has touched his head, not heart. Therefore, Jesus answered the question Nicodemus didn’t even ask. Nicodemus stands as an illustration of men, who know historical Christ, but ignore HIS deity.    Every year we organize prayer meeting in the churches at Good Friday. The crowds flood into the churches hoping the special blessings. The message is focused on the death of Christ is preached and exhort believers to have personal relationship with the One who died on the cross to deliver us from the wrath of God. But in reality, most of believers have failed to love God or express their gratitude towards to HIM for what HE has done for all of us. We all eager to testify about the story of how God saved us or how God supplied our needs or how God has healed. But on other side, we are failed to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ progressively (2 Peter 3:18). We don’t have time to spend in HIS presence being calm and still or meditating on HIS Word. Therefore unfortunately, the 21 st Century has been known as ‘Age of Superficial Christianity’.
